Sam Snead's Personal Vintage Fancy Face Woods Set

Presented here is a great set of Sam Snead's personally-used Chieftain Fancy Face woods. The chieftain was once the top of the line MacGregor wood. In 1927 and 1928, Chieftains sold for an amazing $20 a club; in 1929 they had jumped to $25 each. During this period, other MacGregor fancy face woods (advertised as "Special Faced Clubs") were offered for either $12 or $15 each; plain-face MacGregor woods (no insert) were $5.00 to $8.50 each. In the 1932 catalog, the last catalog to offer the Chieftains, their price dropped to $18.00 each and the "Harmonized Master 30" model at $22.50 per club replaced the Chieftain as the most expensive MacGegor wood. (see lot 41). Of superb construction, the Chieftain embodies the best efforts of MacGegor Golfer-Workmen in design. Streamline type with scruloc inserts in the face, ivory inlay across the top, solid ivory back, and brass keystone sole plate. The ivory inserts of the faceplate are white in the Driver, while the center one on the Brassie is green Yardsmore inlay and the corresponding insert on the Spoon is red inlay. The color code is observed in the center dot of the ivory inlay on the club top and the two dots on the ivory back weight thus making instant identification possible from any viewpoint. These are VERY RARELY seen in full set form and many of the sets that are in private collection show uneven wear indicating sets made from individual clubs and not matching sets.

A letter from the consignor attesting to their provenance and connection to the late Sam Snead will be sent to the winner.
